Christmas Decor for a Small Apartment

Living in a small apartment doesn't offer many options for elaborate holiday decor. With a little ingenuity, however, I've created a lovely holiday-themed apartment. A miniature lighted Christmas tree carefully placed on my side table greets visitors as they enter my home. Making good use of my front room window, I have adorned it with decor, using tinsel and garland, as well as miniature stockings hung with suction cups. As a festive alternative, you might try hanging shiny ornaments on the window in much the same way. If your apartment is designed with a staircase, decorate the banister. Use garland, tinsel, holly or even holiday greeting cards. Finally, if your apartment is furnished with a fireplace, decorate the mantel. I've placed a two-foot tall animated and musical Santa on my mantel. I hope my blog gives you some fun decorating ideas for your small home.

4 Things to Know About Residential Tree Removal

by Luke Patterson

Removing a tree from your yard is a big step. Whether the tree is sick or healthy, you probably hate to see a mature tree go. However, it's important for the safety of your home and family to remove a tree that's weak and unstable. Here are a few things to know about residential tree removal.

1. Talk to Your Codes Office First

You may need to get permission from your local codes office to remove your tree. The inspector may need to examine your tree or measure it to decide if it can be taken down.

Plus, the location of the tree matters since a tree that's in the city easement often needs to be cared for by the city and you may not be allowed to remove it. By getting permission from the city to remove your tree, you won't have to worry about paying a fine later.

2. You Might Get Some Free Mulch

When residential tree removal companies take down a tree, they often bring mulching equipment with them. They feed bushy branches into the chipper to turn the branches into small chips that don't take up much room and are easier to haul away.

Your tree removal company may give you the mulch if you want to use it in your yard rather than haul it away. If you plan to do some landscaping, you might enjoy the convenience of having bulk mulch ready in your yard without having to buy or haul it.

3. The Job Could Take a Few Days

Every tree is different when it comes to tree removal. Some smaller trees that are easy to reach can come down in an afternoon. A mature tree that has a lot of thick branches, or a sick tree, could take much longer to cut down since more work is required.

Plus, a tree that's difficult to access when it's close to your house or other structure needs to be removed bit by bit and that takes longer than a tree that can be felled in large chunks. Besides taking the tree down, the tree removal service has to haul away all the debris, and that might take a couple of days. If you're having the stump ground away too, that could add another day to the work.

4. Get Advice Before Planting a New Tree

If you want a new tree in the same place as your old tree, you may want advice from an arborist first. They may advise you not to plant a new tree where a diseased tree once stood. You'll also want to know the potential height and width of the new tree so you don't plant a tree that will grow too large and become a nuisance.
