Christmas Decor for a Small Apartment

Living in a small apartment doesn't offer many options for elaborate holiday decor. With a little ingenuity, however, I've created a lovely holiday-themed apartment. A miniature lighted Christmas tree carefully placed on my side table greets visitors as they enter my home. Making good use of my front room window, I have adorned it with decor, using tinsel and garland, as well as miniature stockings hung with suction cups. As a festive alternative, you might try hanging shiny ornaments on the window in much the same way. If your apartment is designed with a staircase, decorate the banister. Use garland, tinsel, holly or even holiday greeting cards. Finally, if your apartment is furnished with a fireplace, decorate the mantel. I've placed a two-foot tall animated and musical Santa on my mantel. I hope my blog gives you some fun decorating ideas for your small home.

Custom Painting Your Silhouette Blinds

by Luke Patterson

Silhouette blinds are used in many home to increase privacy and decrease sun glare. Sadly, there are a limited number of designs available when it comes to choosing the blinds for your home. If you have chosen or are considering buying silhouette blinds for your home (from stores like Country Store Interiors), you can custom paint them to tie them into your décor and give them a more personalized look. Here, you will learn how to paint your blinds to make them fit into your home perfectly.

What are your options?

You have two real options when it comes to painting these blinds—freehand paint them or stencil them. If your artistic abilities are limited, you would do best to choose to stencil the blinds. This way, you do not have to rely much on skill and you can let the stencils do all of the artistic work for you.

Plan the Design

The first step in creating your custom design on the blinds is planning the design. Visit your local craft supply or home improvement store to browse the selection of stencils. This will give you help you learn what you have to work with. If you choose to freehand paint the blinds, take a look around your home and look for patterns or designs that have already been used in the décor.

Use a sketch pad to draw the design before you begin painting. This will give your hand a feel for the design and help you learn whether or not you are able to draw the design you have pictured in your mind.

Tip: If the design you are trying to freehand is intricate, or you are having trouble drawing it, consider using self-adhesive stencil film to make a stencil of the design. This will help to keep the design uniform in size and shape and make the painting go much faster.

Paint the Blinds

Lay your blind on a clear area of floor covered with an old blanket or tarp. If stencils are being used, tape it or remove the adhesive backing and adhere it to the blind. Begin painting using your chosen color of fabric paint.

Tip: If you have opted to freehand paint the blind, take the time to draw the design on the blind using a fabric marker or crayon that is close to the same color as the blind. This will help you avoid making mistakes that are easily seen when the blind is hung.

Wait until the paint has dried and hang your blind. The design you have painted on the blind will look great from the inside, and will also be visible from the outside of your home. Take your time and really get creative with the custom look of your silhouette blinds.
