Christmas Decor for a Small Apartment

Living in a small apartment doesn't offer many options for elaborate holiday decor. With a little ingenuity, however, I've created a lovely holiday-themed apartment. A miniature lighted Christmas tree carefully placed on my side table greets visitors as they enter my home. Making good use of my front room window, I have adorned it with decor, using tinsel and garland, as well as miniature stockings hung with suction cups. As a festive alternative, you might try hanging shiny ornaments on the window in much the same way. If your apartment is designed with a staircase, decorate the banister. Use garland, tinsel, holly or even holiday greeting cards. Finally, if your apartment is furnished with a fireplace, decorate the mantel. I've placed a two-foot tall animated and musical Santa on my mantel. I hope my blog gives you some fun decorating ideas for your small home.

3 Unexpected Ways A Water Softener Can Save You Money

by Luke Patterson

Many Americans today are living on tight budgets. If you are trying to cut your household expenses, it may be beneficial to invest in a water softener. While most people think that a water softener leaves your dishes free from water spots, these home appliances can actually save you money over time.

Here are three unexpected ways water softening can save your family money.

1. A water softener can help your clothing last longer.

The minerals found in municipal water supplies can take a toll on your clothing. When laundered in hard water, clothing can become dingy and dull much quicker. This is due to the fact that the minerals found in hard water make their way into the weave of the fabric used to make your clothing. Mineral buildup can weaken the integrity of the fabric, causing your clothing to wear out faster.

The average American household invests 3.8% of their income purchasing new clothing. Installing a water softener will allow you to reduce your clothing spending and save more money over time.

2. A water softener can reduce the amount of laundry detergent you use.

Adding detergent to your laundry is the easiest way to ensure that your clothing is cleaned properly. Purchasing laundry detergent can be costly, so finding ways to get more life out of each bottle of detergent can be beneficial when you are trying to cut costs. The minerals found in hard water make it difficult for laundry detergent to lather properly. As a result, you must use more detergent to ensure your clothing is clean.

By installing a water softener, you can reduce the amount of laundry detergent you use by up to 50%. Using less laundry detergent per load will allow you to save more money by reducing your detergent spending in the future.

3. Mineral deposits left behind by hard water can erode pipes.

Functional pipes are essential when it comes to maintaining your home's plumbing system. The minerals contained within hard water (specifically calcium and magnesium) can be deposited on the walls of pipes as water travels throughout your home.

Over time, these mineral deposits can clog up or erode your pipes. Installing a water softener will ensure that the water traveling through your home's plumbing system will not damage pipes. Keeping your pipes healthy will allow you to avoid costly plumbing repairs in the future.

If you are hoping to save money in the future, consider the financial benefits of installing a water softener in your home.
